Improving Container Image Registry Availability with Kube Image Keeper - Jérôme Petazzoni, Tiny Shell Script LLC

kube-image-keeper (or "kuik") is an open source container image caching system for Kubernetes. It saves the images used by your pods in its own local registry so that these images remain available if the original becomes unavailable. This insulates your clusters from common registry issues (e.g. slow or unavailable registries; or images being deleted from registries). The Enix engineering team manages hundreds of Kubernetes clusters, both for our internal use and for our customers. After noticing that registry issues were a recurring pain point across a broad range of clusters, and reviewing existing solutions and workarounds, we decided to tackle the problem by developing kuik. In the first half of this talk, we will explain the rationale and architecture of kuik itself. In the second half, we will share our experience writing a Kubernetes operator from scratch with the kubebuilder framework. This talk will be useful for you either if you are experiencing registry pull problems, or if you would like to learn what it's like to build a simple-yet-useful Kubernetes operator with kubebuilder. You can learn more about kuik (including how to deploy it on your clusters) on its GitHub page: https://github.com/enix/kube-image-keeper/
