There are many reasons why Open Source is especially crucial for the Energy Access sector. One of those reasons is the scarce funding the sector receives, contrasted with the projected funding needed to achieve the sector's goal: SDG7. It is estimated that 770 million people lack access to energy and it is projected that $51 billion is needed to finance the bridging of that gap. Typically, this is approached by giving funding to many companies, who essentially end up developing the same solutions. However, our funding takes a different approach to this problem and we do so through the power of Open Source. By funding one company to develop a solution to a problem commonly faced in the sector, and then open-sourcing the development materials, other companies are able to replicate it without using already scarce funds to ''reinvent the wheel''. We are excited to share with the Open Source community the stories of how Open Innovations have introduced more interoperability and efficiency to a sector that is working towards a goal of bringing affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. Moreover, we will share our experience of building a community around Open Source solutions and how we are changing the outdated idea that Open Source is not profitable.
