The rise in renewable energy and the electrification of energy consumption drives the power grid to its limits. Grid operators like Alliander require new digital solutions to better use the capacity that is currently available in the grid. LF Energy's Open Source projects like OpenSTEF, Power Grid Model and Shapeshifter play a key role here. OpenSTEF provides a complete software stack that forecasts the load on the electricity grid for the next hours to days. Given a time series of measured load or generation, a fully automated machine learning pipeline is executed which delivers a probabilistic forecast of load. Power Grid Model is a Python library for steady-state distribution power system analysis. Currently, it supports power flow, and state estimation calculations. Shapeshifter is a protocol and library for the exchange of flexibility between aggregators and grid operators. It facilitates market interactions to resolve grid constraints by applying congestion management or grid capacity management. In this talk, we will tell you more about the OpenSTEF project, Power Grid Model project and Shapeshifter project, and how these projects can work together to help grid operators to increase grid capacity and integrate more renewable energy resources into the power grid.
