When did you last stop yourself from sharing something and why? Every person has a story. And each story brings forth a unique identity… if there is a safe space for it. In this talk I want to raise awareness about the common reasons for the “unheard voices” and their consequences. By losing one voice a community not only loses one valuable perspective, but all related stories and inspirations are lost, which affects the “shared narrative” and the identity of the group is incomplete. As a woman with non-tech background in tech industry, I have observed and experienced it in different communities for the last 10 years, but it is only since I was introduced to Playback theater (a form of improv theater in which audience tell stories from their lives and watch them enacted), that I have started building the awareness and skillset to address and improve it for myself and others. Playback and Open Source share similar values of inclusivity, respect, trust and collaboration, and I will share some of my learnings as an actor and facilitator that can be applied to working in open source communities. The audience can walk away from this talk with examples and practical advice on how to create space for unheard voices and grow compassion and empathy towards ourselves and others.
