In April 2021 Amazon announced OpenSearch, a community-driven, open-source fork of Elasticsearch and Kibana. Decidedly, doing open-source at Amazon has had its unique challenges! In this talk we will take you through the journey of doing open-source from the inside of a large company, like we mean it. You will learn what motivated us, what it took to do a fork with 75+ GitHub repositories, hear about the heavy lifting required to produce a new distribution, the logistics involved in organizing a sharp turn for dozens of developers in the ways they worked, how we raised the security bar, onboarded many external maintainers, and fended some disruptors. We'll ask hard questions, be self critical, celebrate our successes, and talk about the future of cloud-native open-source search.
