The Ersilia Open Source Initiative is a Linux Foundation member tech non-profit equipping universities, laboratories and clinics in low income countries (LIC) with AI tools for infectious disease research. Through a collaborative approach, Ersilia aims to find solutions for the unmet healthcare needs of the Global South. Our work is based on the following pillars: (1) open source (we release all code under GPLv3 licenses), (2) decolonized in-country research (we act as support partners to researchers based in the countries where the infectious diseases are endemic), (3) skills development (we provide capacity building in AI and data science), and (4) sustainable use of local resources, including ethnobotanical natural products. In this talk, we will discuss how we have built a global community of researchers, code contributors and volunteers from the industry, non-profit and academic sectors, and underrepresented minorities in STEM to, collectively, build open source software that will contribute to ending infectious disease threads. We will showcase the Ersilia Model Hub, our flagship technology featuring ready-to-use, pretrained AI models for antimicrobial drug discovery.
