AI is expected to make highly-distributed edge cloud architectures more adaptable to changing business needs. A number of strategic sectors are clearly driving the adoption of open source technologies for this next-generation edge cloud, which will help companies take advantage of all those benefits through new open solutions that ensure interoperability and vendor neutrality. Based on IKERLAN’s first-hand experience as part of the Mondragon Corporation—the largest industrial group in the Basque Country, and a world reference in cooperative work—this Lightning Talk will delve into how EU companies in the Industry & Manufacturing sectors are positioning themselves in this evolving technology landscape. This presentation will focus on examining the practical application of open source technologies within these industries, with real-world examples that showcase how they are helping them to foster innovation and remain competitive. This talk will also provide an example of R&D collaboration around open source edge cloud technologies: the COGNIT Project, which is creating a new distributed Function-as-a-Service paradigm for edge application management and AI-enabled orchestration, called to revolutionize how data from edge/IoT devices is processed across the cloud-edge continuum.
